What is a Circular Saw?

A Circular Saw is a handheld saw powerful enough to cut various tough materials, including wood, metals, plastics, and even concrete and bricks. They’re able to cut at various angles and directions based on the movements of the user.

What is a Standard Circular Saw?

A Standard Circular Saw allows you to adjust cutting depth and blade angle before starting a cut. These saws come with a small parallel edge guide to assist with straight cutting and are suitable for a wide range of cutting tasks on job sites and in home workshops.

What makes Circular Saws so popular?

The combination of portability and high accuracy makes circular saws a very popular choice on worksites and for personal DIY projects. They're also more powerful and time-efficient than traditional saws.

What would I use a Circular Saw for?

A Circular Saw is the appropriate tool for making angled and straight cuts into flat-sided workpieces. It's ideal for tasks like constructing wood-framed stud walls that require precise 90-degree cuts. A Circular Saw is also perfect for making straight and beveled cuts when working on projects like decking, interior flooring, framing, wood panels, metal sheeting, or cladding.

Where can I use my Circular Saw?

Evolution’s plug-in Circular Saws are compact and easily portable between job sites and home workshops. They can be used on any flat surface, whether track-mounted or used with a cutting bench or sawhorse.

Evolution’s Cordless 20v EXT Circular Saws can be used anywhere. These lightweight, powerful, compact, and accurate Circular Saws are perfect for both home workshops and trade use on construction sites.

How many types of Circular Saw are there?

There are three primary types of Circular Saws: Standard, Track Saw, and Plunge Saw. Evolution specializes in both corded and cordless Circular Saws. Our R185CCSX kit is the top-selling Track Saw combo in the US.

Who needs a Circular Saw?

If you have a project that involves making perpendicular or angled cuts in a workpiece, a Circular Saw is often the right tool. When used with a track system, you can achieve long, straight perpendicular, or beveled cuts comparable to the best Table Saws.

How accurate are Circular Saws?

Evolution Circular Saws offer repeatable cut accuracy to within half a degree for both bevel and cuts. The adjustable depth stops also allow for perfectly accurate cuts at partial depths.

Are Circular Saws Dangerous?

Any power tool can be hazardous if used incorrectly. Evolution Circular Saws are equipped with multiple safety features to ensure safe and accurate cutting. This includes articulating blade guards, electronic blade brakes, and precision cutting guides as standard features on Evolution Circular Saws.

Can a beginner use a Circular Saw?

If you’re just starting out using power tools, a Circular Saw is a good choice. It’s reliable and powerful, but also offers a great learning experience depending on your skill level. The blade guard and trigger locations also offer a good level of safety compared to some other saws, as long as proper safety measures are followed as standard.

Can a Circular Saw cut metal?

All Evolution Circular Saws can cut metal, as well as wood, plastic, and composites, with our standard Multi-material blade. We also manufacture a range of blades designed specifically for cutting aluminum, stainless steel, mild steel, and non-ferrous metals for all of our Circular Saws, Table saws, Chop saws, and Miter saws.

Can a Circular Saw cut tile and other ceramics?

Circular Saws are not suitable for cutting ceramics and masonry. If you need a quick cut in a tile or other piece of masonry, an Evolution Miter Saw with a diamond-tipped blade will get the job done. If you need to make repeated cuts in masonry, we recommend looking at our range of Electric Disc Cutters/Concrete Saws.

What saw blade is best for cutting laminate flooring?

The best Evolution saw blades for cutting laminate flooring are either the Fine Wood blades or the Thin Steel blades. The Fine Wood blade is ideal for wood-based laminate flooring types. For vinyl laminate flooring boards with a high-wear protective coating, such as aluminum oxide, the Thin Steel blade is recommended. It has a higher tooth count, minimizing wear caused by the protective layer.

What is a Track Saw?

A Track Saw is a Circular Saw that can be used with a Rail System, such as our R185CCSX and ST2800 products. By attaching the saw to the track, you can achieve straight cuts up to 110 inches in length with precision down to fractions of a millimeter, rivaling the performance of professional Table Saws.

What is a Plunge Saw?

A Plunge Saw offers the functionalities of a track saw and often includes an enclosed blade for reduced dust generation. It allows the user to adjust the cutting depth at any time. Plunge Saws are typically more expensive than Track Saws and usually require brand-specific rail systems.

Should I buy a Circular Saw or a Table Saw?

Opt for a Circular Saw if you want a portable, handheld tool for making perpendicular or beveled cuts in flat-sided materials. They're also excellent for cutting sheet material. Consider a Circular Saw with a Track if you're short on space and can't accommodate a Table Saw.

Should I buy a Circular Saw or a Miter Saw?

Choose a Circular Saw for making straight or angled cuts through square or large rectangular workpieces, or for cutting sheet materials. For precise compound miter and bevel cuts, a Miter Saw is the better choice.

How does the parallel edge guide work on a Circular Saw?

The edge guide acts as a backstop to position the saw at a fixed distance from the edge of the workpiece. It allows you to set the distance between the blade and the edge of the job, ensuring a specific width of cut.

Can I make perfectly straight cuts with the parallel edge guide?

While it's possible to achieve a good straight cut with a circular saw using the edge guide, the accuracy is limited by the straightness of the workpiece's edge. It's not possible to achieve a straight cut with a parallel edge guide on a curved piece of board.

Are Saw blades universal?

When selecting a blade for your saw, it's crucial to ensure that it matches the correct blade diameter, kerf width, rotation direction, arbor size, and maximum speed rating. Therefore, saw blades are not universal. Evolution saws are designed to be used exclusively with Evolution blades and are not covered under warranty for use with third-party blades that may not meet the same specifications as our blades. Using an improper blade can damage your saw and pose a risk of injury, so please only use Evolution blades on your Evolution saw.

What size circular saw blade do I need?

Select a circular saw that provides the depth of cut you require. Larger blades allow for deeper, faster cuts with a smoother finish. For DIY use at home, a 6-1/2 inch circular saw is often suitable. Users needing more power and versatility tend to opt for a 7-1/4 inch model. Our R185CCSX is our most popular size, offering a maximum 2.5 inches depth of cut.

Do all Circular Saws have dust extraction?

All Evolution Circular Saws with Multi-material blades can be connected to powered dust extraction systems to help maintain a clean workspace. The Evolution R11VAC-Li Wet and Dry Workshop Vacuum can be used with all of our Multi-material Circular Saws, providing remote start-up for instant cleaning.

Evolution's metal cutting Circular Saws are either equipped with chip extraction ports (S185CCSL) or have integrated magnetic chip collection trays (S210CCS).

How long will my blade last?

The lifespan of a blade depends on the material being cut. The harder the material, the shorter the blade's life. Evolution only uses premium, Japanese-sourced carbide in our saw blades. This type of carbide is better finished, tougher, and longer-lasting compared to more commonly used grades. Cleaning the teeth of your blade, especially when cutting exterior grades of wood, will help keep your blade running smoothly by removing sap and resin buildup. We recommend using a cloth dampened with spray-on automotive brake cleaner to maintain your blades in pristine condition.

Can Circular Saw blades be sharpened?

Evolution Circular Saw blades feature Tungsten Carbide Teeth, which can be sharpened by a specialized saw sharpener with the appropriate diamond polishing equipment. While this can be cost-effective for larger blades, those 10-inch and smaller may not be as economical to sharpen compared to replacing the blade.

What is the difference between the R185CCS and the R185CCSX models?

The R185CCS model features a low-profile base system that is not compatible with circular saw track systems. The Evolution R185CCSX & R185CCSX+ models are track compatible.

What types of metal can I cut with a Multi-material blade?

All Evolution Circular Saws can cut mild steel and non-ferrous metals with the provided Multi-material blade. To cut materials like aluminum, 304 stainless steel, brass, copper, and other non-ferrous metals, choose one of our material-specific metal cutting blades.

If you need a heavyweight saw suitable for fabrication use, the S210CCS Heavy Duty Metal Cutting Fabrication Saw is the best choice. If you prefer a bench-mounted saw with a substantial cutting capacity, then the S355CPSL Chop Saw will cut through mild steel and non-ferrous tube, profile, angle, and thick plate with ease. Choose the model that suits your specific requirements. If you need higher cutting capacities, the S380CPS is our 15-inch Chop Saw; and finally, If you need a saw for making precision angled cuts in large metal workpieces, then the new S355MCS Miter Cutting Chop Saw is unbeatable.

Can a Circular Saw cut 3x2?

The maximum cut depth of a Circular Saw depends on the blade size and the clearance around the blade guard. All of Evolution’s 7-1/4 inch Circular Saws can cut through 3x2 inch material.

Which brand offers the longest Circular Saw warranty?

All Evolution Circular Saws come with an extended 3-year warranty covering parts and manufacturing. Evolution also has a service center at our office to ensure your power tools continue to operate flawlessly for years to come.

Do I need a Circular Saw Track?

If you need to make long straight, perpendicular, or beveled cuts in sheet materials, you will either need a Circular Saw Track kit or a Table Saw with a large flatbed and outfeed extensions. An Evolution circular saw and track kit (ST2800) can easily make straight cuts up to 8 feet in length with an accuracy that rivals with the most expensive table saw.

For a compact solution to making long straight cuts in sheet material, it’s hard to beat the value and performance offered by our R185CCSX circular saw and ST2800 110-inch 2-piece (2x55”) track kit.

Are Circular Saw tracks universal?

The Evolution ST2800 and ST1400 Circular Saw Tracks are compatible with Circular Saws from many popular brands, as well as all of Evolution’s Track Compatible Circular Saws (R185CCSX models).

However, not every Circular Saw from every brand fits every Circular Saw track, so please check before making a purchase.

What is the best saw for cutting plywood sheets?

A circular saw with a 110-inch track would be an excellent choice for cutting large quantities of plywood sheets. If you're boarding out a room or laying flooring that requires a ply substrate, the Evolution R185CCSX & 110-inch Track (ST2800) would be the perfect choice, especially if you don’t have the space for a large table saw.

Which saw is best for laminate flooring?

The R185CCSX is the perfect choice for fitting laminate flooring. It allows you to make accurate, perpendicular, and beveled cuts through your flooring. For laying engineered wood and luxury vinyl flooring, we’d recommend using the 7-1/2 inch Fine Wood blade for the smoothest cut edge.
